Tracy Kidder, the ´´master of the nonfiction narrative´´ (The Baltimore Sun) and author of the best-selling classic The Soul of a New Machine, now tells the story of Paul English, a kinetic and unconventional inventor and entrepreneur who as a boy rebelled against authority. Growing up in working-class Boston, English discovered a medium for his talents the first time he saw a computer. As a young man, despite suffering from what would eventually be diagnosed as bipolar disorder, he began his pilgrim´s journey through the ups and downs in the brave new world of computers. Relating to the Internet as if it were an extension of his own mind, he discovered that he had a talent for conceiving innovative enterprises and building teams that can develop them, becoming ´´a Pied Piper´´ of geeks. His innovative management style, success, and innate sense of fair play inspire intense loyalty. Early on one colleague observed, ´´Someday this boy´s going to get hit by a truck full of money, and I´m going to be standing beside him´´. Yet when English did indeed make a fortune - when the travel website Kayak was sold for almost $2 billion - the first thing he thought about was how to give the money away: ´´What else would you do with it?´´ The second thing he thought was, ´´What´s next?´´ With the power of a consummate storyteller, Tracy Kidder casts a fresh, critical, and often humorous eye on the way new ideas and new money are reshaping our culture and the world. A Truck Full of Money is a mesmerizing portrait of an irresistibly endearing man who is indefatigable, original, and as unpredictable as America itself. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Paul Michael. About the author: I have been driving a truck full time for over four years at the time of this publishing. I have been a company driver for three of those years, and an owner/operator for a bit over one. In the four-plus years that I´ve been driving, I have spent one year driving most of the lower 48 states. I haven´t made it up to North Carolina or a few other states in the northeast, but all of the others I have. For the last two years, I have been truck driving with my team from Los Angeles to the Kansas City area and back. We did that twice a week. After doing that for about a year, I was able to get a driving position working nights and being home every day. I did that for almost year. I left there because the company did a pathetic job of maintaining their equipment. I was afraid of getting stopped by law enforcement. So I left them and got my own truck to take care of. Now I am contracted with a carrier to move their freight and it works out a lot better. Let´s talk about the money. Most truck drivers can expect to earn $30,000-$40,000 in their first year. I know some drivers who work as solo drivers and decide to give up their apartments so they can stay in the truck all year long and save money. They still take days off from time to time and stay with friends, family, or rent a hotel for a few days so they can take a break. Once you have six months experience, you may be able to find a job that pays more money. I´ve seen motivated drivers earning in the $60,000 range in their first year. The money is there to earn if you look for it. Too many drivers get complacent and they stay with the same company, in the same position, making low wages for years and years. Sometimes all you need to do to increase your income is switch positions within the company. If the company you work for doesn´t offer anything that will take you to the next level then find another company that will. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Rick Baverstock. Sarah Walters is a less-than-perfect debutante. She tries hard to follow the time-honored customs of the Charleston Camellia Society, as her mother and grandmother did, standing up straight in cotillion class and attending lectures about all the things that Camellias don´t do. (Like ride with boys in pickup trucks). But Sarah can´t quite ignore the barbarism just beneath all that propriety, and as soon as she can she decamps South Carolina for a life in New York City. There, she and her fellow displaced Southern friends try to make sense of city sophistication, to understand how much of their training applies to real life, and how much to the strange and rarefied world they´ve left behind. When life´s complications become overwhelming, Sarah returns home to confront with matured eyes the motto ´´Once a Camellia, always a Camellia´´- and to see how much fuller life can be, for good and for ill, among those who know you best. Girls in Trucks introduces a narrative voice that is astonishing and irresistible - a true, sweet, and wise voice that heralds the arrival of an exciting new talent. 1. Language: English. On January 12, 2010, the deadliest earthquake in the history of the Western Hemisphere struck the nation least prepared to handle one. Jonathan M. Katz, the only full-time American news correspondent in Haiti, was inside his house when it buckled along with hundreds of thousands of others. In this visceral first-hand account, Katz takes readers inside the terror of that day, the devastation visited on ordinary Haitians, and through the monumental--yet misbegotten--rescue effort that followed. More than half of American adults gave money for Haiti, part of a global response that reached $16.3 billion in pledges. But three years later the effort has foundered. Its most important promises--to rebuild safer cities, alleviate severe poverty, and strengthen Haiti to face future disasters--remain unfulfilled. How did so much generosity amount to so little? What went wrong? The Big Truck That Went By presents a hard hitting investigation into international aid, finding that the way wealthy countries give today makes poor countries seem irredeemably hopeless, while trapping millions in cycles of privation and catastrophe. Katz follows the money to uncover startling truths about how good intentions go wrong, and what can be done to make aid ´´smarter.´´ Reporting at the side of Bill Clinton, Wyclef Jean, Sean Penn, Haiti´s leaders and people, Katz also creates a complex, darkly funny, and unexpected portrait of one of the world´s most fascinating countries. The Big Truck That Went By is not only a definitive account of Haiti´s earthquake, but of the world we live in today. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Jonathan Davis, Jonathan M. Katz.
